Actor Misinterprets Rare Cancer as Flu Leading to Loss of Half a Lung
The remarkable journey of theatre actor Jarryd Nurden exemplifies resilience and the pursuit of passion against overwhelming odds. Just six months after undergoing a significant lung surgery, he made an impressive return to the stage in London’s West End.
Actor’s Cancer Journey and Surgery
Nurden, originally from KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa, faced a life-altering diagnosis of primary malignant neuroendocrine neoplasm of the lung, also known as atypical carcinoid. His health struggles began with what he initially believed was a severe flu. After experiencing persistent symptoms, medical examinations revealed a tumor in January 2023 that had significantly increased in size—from 2 cm to 4 cm.
Upon confirmation of the tumor’s cancerous nature, Nurden underwent keyhole surgery to evaluate the situation further. However, the prognosis changed drastically, necessitating a completion lobectomy, which involved the removal of the entire lower lobe of his left lung.

Incredibly, Nurden returned to the stage just three months post-surgery, taking on the role of Mary Sunshine in the musical “Chicago.” This moment was profoundly emotional for him, marking a triumphant comeback.
Reflecting on his experience, Nurden stated, “Taking that bow gave me immense gratitude. I appreciated being back on stage in a show I love with such a supportive company.”
