West End Actor Triumphs Over Cancer Threat to Pursue Dream Career
Jarryd Nurden, a dedicated actor originally from South Africa, faced a challenging battle with cancer that threatened his aspirations of performing in the West End. His journey began when he relocated from KwaZulu-Natal to London with the dream of making a mark on the prestigious theatrical scene.
Overcoming a Cancer Diagnosis
At the age of 34, Nurden received a diagnosis of a rare lung cancer known as primary malignant neuroendocrine neoplasm, or atypical carcinoid. This diagnosis came shortly after he arrived in London in October 2021. Jarryd sold everything to pursue his dreams but faced a devastating setback when he learned he would require surgery to remove the lower lobe of his left lung.
Reflecting on the moment he received the news, Nurden described it as feeling like he was “underwater.” He felt a profound sense of uncertainty about his future, stating, “I had made plans on how to survive, but this was taking me out of the picture for God knows how long.”
Career Aspirations Amidst Health Challenges
Nurden had ambitious plans upon arriving in London, with two West End auditions lined up. He nearly landed his first role in Andrew Lloyd Webber’s “Cinderella” in spring 2022, but the show closed prematurely. Instead, he secured a part in a Christmas panto for 2022, only to fall ill, which doctors initially believed was the flu.
In January 2023, Jarryd’s agent delivered positive news about a role in “We Will Rock You.” However, that same day, doctors discovered a tumor that required keyhole surgery. Sadly, the results confirmed it was cancerous, leading to further treatment options being discussed.
Struggles and Resilience
- Half of Nurden’s lung was removed to combat the cancer.
- He experienced intense pain and underwent multiple surgeries.
- After surgery, he spent four months in the hospital, facing serious complications.
After significant recovery, Jarryd was offered an international tour for “Chicago” but had to decline. Following another operation in July to manage a fistula, Nurden faced uncertainty regarding his ability to perform again.
A Return to the Stage
Despite these setbacks, Jarryd remained hopeful and was eventually offered a role in “Chicago” for a September run in China. Just three months post-surgery, he returned to the stage as Mary Sunshine. He described the experience as both a challenge and a privilege, stating he felt “immense gratitude” to be performing again.
Jarryd’s inspiring journey highlights not only his courage in the face of cancer but also his unwavering dedication to his craft. His story serves as a reminder of the resilience many artists possess while pursuing their dreams.
