Jack Della Maddalena Narrowly Avoids Weight Mishap as Fight with Makhachev at UFC 322 is Confirmed

Jack Della Maddalena faced a tense moment during the official weigh-in on Friday morning, ahead of UFC 322. He is set to fight Islam Makhachev on Saturday. Initially, Della Maddalena exceeded the weight limit for a welterweight title bout, registering above 77.1 kg on the scale.

To get an accurate weight, he used a privacy screen to remove extra clothing. After this, he weighed in at a precise 77 kg. In contrast, Makhachev successfully made weight at 77.1 kg, officially confirming the headline fight.

Title Defense and First-time Challenge

This matchup marks Makhachev’s first attempt at the welterweight title. He vacated his lightweight title earlier this year due to challenges with weight cuts during previous defenses. For Della Maddalena, the bout represents his first title defense after claiming the welterweight championship in May. He won the title by defeating Belal Muhammad in a unanimous decision after an intense five-round fight.

Weigh-in Results for UFC 322

All four Brazilian fighters on the UFC 322 card successfully made weight. Carlos Prates, the lone Brazilian on the main card, weighed in at 77 kg, confirming his match against former champion Leon Edwards, who weighed 77.1 kg.

  • Rodolfo Vieira (middleweight)
  • Gregory Rodrigues (middleweight)
  • Matheus Camilo (lightweight)

Each of these fighters also successfully made weight. However, Beneil Dariush did miss weight by half a kilogram for the lightweight category. His opponent, Benoit Saint-Denis, agreed to proceed with the fight and will receive 20% of Dariush’s purse.

Fortunately, none of the matches at UFC 322 needed to be canceled as a result of weigh-in issues.
