Israel Targets UNIFIL Forces in Southern Lebanon in Tense Confrontation
The United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) has reported a tense confrontation involving Israeli forces on Sunday. An Israeli tank fired at UNIFIL soldiers positioned close to an Israeli post within Lebanese territory. Fortunately, the soldiers managed to take cover and no injuries occurred during the incident.
Israeli Actions in Southern Lebanon
This incident comes amidst escalating tensions. Israeli aircraft also dropped sound bombs near residents from Dhahira, who were fortunate to find shelter and escape without harm. After the tank fire, the Israeli unit withdrew.
UNIFIL’s Response
UNIFIL described this occurrence as a serious violation of UN resolution 1701. The force explicitly called on the Israeli military to halt any attacks on its personnel in southern Lebanon. Diplomatic efforts are being made, with Lebanese President Joseph Aoun urging an immediate complaint to the United Nations Security Council. His request follows Israel’s construction of a concrete wall that extends beyond the internationally recognized blue line at the southern border.
Recent Violations by Israel
- On October 27, an Israeli drone attempted to down UNIFIL patrols.
- A bomb was also dropped near a UNIFIL site in Kfarkila.
- Earlier on October 12, one UNIFIL soldier suffered minor injuries due to an explosion from an Israeli drone.
Since its establishment in 1978 after the Israeli invasion, UNIFIL has been tasked with monitoring the cessation of hostilities in southern Lebanon. Following the July 2006 war and subsequent resolution 1701, its mandate was reinforced. Today, the force includes over 10,000 soldiers dedicated to supporting the Lebanese army and maintaining stability in the region south of the Litani River.
