Search for Missing Royal Fleet Auxiliary Sailor off Ireland’s Coast Concludes

An extensive search operation off the coast of Ireland for a missing Royal Fleet Auxiliary (RFA) sailor has concluded without success. This announcement was made by the Ministry of Defence after days of coordinated efforts.

Details of the Search for the Missing RFA Sailor

The crew member of the RFA Tidesurge was last seen around 10:30 PM on a Friday night. The search area spanned the sea between Tory Island in County Donegal and Eagle Island in County Mayo.

Defence Secretary John Healey expressed his sorrow, saying, “After an extensive search, it is with deep sadness that we confirm the missing crew member of RFA Tidesurge has not been found.” He extended his gratitude to the various organizations that participated in the search operation.

Search Coordination and Efforts

The search operation began after the Irish Coast Guard received a distress signal from the UK naval support vessel before 9 AM on Saturday. Immediate steps were taken to launch a rescue effort. The coordination of the search involved multiple agencies, including:

  • Irish Coast Guard
  • Royal Navy
  • Royal Air Force
  • Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI)
  • Irish authorities

The operation was directed from the Irish Coast Guard’s Maritime Rescue Sub Centre located in Malin, County Donegal. Efforts included deploying:

  • UK naval support vessels
  • Three RNLI all-weather lifeboats
  • Two aircraft and a helicopter from the Irish Coast Guard

Investigation Following the Search Conclusion

Despite the comprehensive search, the missing sailor was not located, and the search has officially ended. The individual’s family has been informed, and they have requested privacy during this challenging time.

A spokesperson from the Ministry of Defence confirmed that an investigation will commence into this incident. It has also been stated that no other personnel were reported missing or harmed during the search.

The Royal Fleet Auxiliary plays a crucial role in supporting the Royal Navy, employing sailors as civil servants rather than military personnel.
