Former Gucci Designer Frida Giannini Turns Struggles into Success with New Rome Bistro Bixio in Tribute to Her Mother
Frida Giannini, a renowned former Gucci designer, has embraced a new chapter in her life by opening a contemporary bistro called Bixio in Rome’s Monteverde Vecchio neighborhood. This venture pays tribute to her late mother and reflects her passion for design, architecture, and gastronomy.
Transforming the Past into a Contemporary Bistro
Giannini’s journey began with a personal loss that deepened her connection to her roots. After the passing of her mother, who had been battling a severe illness, Giannini took time away from the spotlight. This period of reflection led her to explore her passion for food and community.
At only 29, Giannini previously held the esteemed position of creative director at Gucci. Her latest project, Bixio, is located in a space that holds significant memories for her. “It was my favorite spot to return to after every trip,” she recalls, emphasizing the emotional connection she has with the place.
A Community Hub with Historical Significance
Newly renovated, the bistro retains the essence of the historic bar Faustini, where Giannini used to have breakfast. Open to the public as of November 16, 2025, it aims to serve as a hub for locals, blending history with contemporary culinary offerings. The bistro has seating for approximately 30 inside and an additional 20 in the outdoor area.
- Location: Monteverde Vecchio, Rome
- Opening Date: November 16, 2025
- Capacity: 30 indoors, 20 outdoors
Giannini’s passion for her neighborhood is evident as she recounts her memories of the area. Her grandparents were among the early residents, adding another layer of depth to her commitment to preserving its character.
The Name and Inspiration Behind Bixio
The bistro is named after Gerolamo Bixio, a figure associated with the Italian unification. For Giannini, the name also carries personal significance, as it honors her late mother, who attended the local school named after Bixio. The design of the brand allows for creative reinterpretation, showcasing Giannini’s artistic flair.
Bixio offers a wide range of dining options, from breakfast to dinner, all executed with a focus on quality and local ingredients. Collaborating closely with family, including her cousin Doriana Torriero, who serves as the bistro’s operations director, they have crafted a menu that emphasizes community and craftsmanship.
A Homey Atmosphere with Thoughtful Details
The interior design reflects Giannini’s personal journey and artistic sensibilities. Elements from her own home have been incorporated, like antique frames and Murano glass fixtures, to create an intimate ambiance. “Every choice reflects my dedication to detail and warmth,” she asserts.
Reflecting on her late mother’s influence, Giannini believes her mother would have appreciated the effort put into Bixio. She hopes to create a welcoming space where people can enjoy the beauty of community and culinary art, just as her mother would have cherished.
Bixio isn’t just a restaurant; it embodies Giannini’s resilience and her ability to turn personal struggles into a successful tribute to her family and heritage.
