Rome Unveils Unique Coin Collection Celebrating Christianity Judaism and Islam Through Mint’s Trilogy
Rome has taken a cultural step forward by unveiling a special collection of silver coins celebrating the three major monotheistic religions: Christianity, Judaism, and Islam. This initiative is a tribute to San Pietro, the Great Synagogue, and the Great Mosque, symbolizing dialogue and coexistence among these faiths in the Italian capital.
Silver Coin Trilogy Celebrating Faith
The Italian State Mint has introduced a unique trio of silver coins aimed at highlighting the shared heritage of the three religions present in Rome. This project, titled “The Three Monotheistic Religions Under the Sky of Rome,” has been promoted by the Ministry of Economy and Finance.
Each coin features a dedicated symbol representing its respective faith, encapsulating a message of unity and peaceful coexistence. The phrase “In Abraham three faiths, one vision” is engraved on the edge of each coin, referencing their shared Abrahamic roots.
Cultural Collaboration
The project represents a collaborative effort among the religious communities in Rome. Key figures in this initiative include:
- Archbishop Vincenzo Paglia (Christianity)
- Chief Rabbi Riccardo Di Segni (Judaism)
- Imam Nader Akkad (Islam)
This trio has contributed to crafting a symbol not of uniformity, but of respect and unity among diverse beliefs.
Design Highlights
Each of the three coins is valued at 3 euros and finished to a brilliant uncirculated quality. The designs are as follows:
- Christian Coin: Features a stylized dome of St. Peter’s Basilica, inscribed with “Basilica di San Pietro a Roma” and the signature of designer Monica Ciucci.
- Jewish Coin: Depicts the Great Synagogue of Rome with a stylized dome. The inscription “Tempio Maggiore di Roma” is included, along with engraver Silvia Ciucci’s signature.
- Islamic Coin: Illustrates the Great Mosque, showcasing its minaret and dome, along with an image of the surrounding square and fountain. It also bears the inscription “Grande Moschea di Roma.”
A Shared Vision for Peace
The reverse side of the coins features a common design, depicting a starry sky and three circles converging at a central point. This imagery resonates with the biblical promise of a multitude of descendants as numerous as the stars, linking the three faiths and symbolizing their shared aspirations for peace.
Located at the iconic Piazza del Campidoglio, recognized for its civic and cultural significance, this design emphasizes that these symbols belong to everyone in the city.
Looking to the Future
In times of global tension and religious conflict, this coin collection transcends mere collectibles. It emphasizes Rome’s historical role as a space for coexistence, however imperfect. These coins do not aim to solve divisions but offer a perspective: three faiths, one city, and a hopeful dialogue.
This initiative invites us to share the same vision under the sky of Abraham, reminding us that peace is not just a dream, but a patient endeavor built one coin engraving at a time.
