Speeding Dad Drags Police Officer Along Road in Desperate Escape Attempt
A father from Gillingham is now facing potential jail time after a dangerous driving incident involving a police officer. On October 31, Tony Atherton, 41, was caught driving recklessly in residential streets of Chatham.
Incident Overview
Atherton was initially approached by law enforcement while driving a Ford Puma. Officers noticed his erratic driving and attempted to intervene. He momentarily stopped and exited the vehicle. However, in a sudden move, he re-entered the car and sped off, dragging a police officer along the road.
Details of the Escape
The officer clung to the driver’s door during the escape, only letting go when he assessed his safety. Reports indicate the officer was dragged between 5 to 10 feet before managing to disengage from the vehicle. Fortunately, he did not sustain any injuries during this harrowing incident.
Charges and Court Appearance
Atherton was charged with three driving-related offenses and two theft offenses. During his court appearance at Medway Magistrates’ Court on November 3, he admitted to:
- Dangerous driving
- Driving without insurance
- Driving without a license
- Theft of 20 packs of chewing gum valued at £300
- Theft of confectionery worth £381
Reckless Behavior and Prior Offenses
The court detailed Atherton’s dangerous driving behavior across various locations, including Letchworth Avenue, Palmerston Road, and Kitchener Avenue. Prosecutor Neil Sweeney informed the court about Atherton’s previous convictions for similar offenses, including aggravated vehicle taking and dangerous driving, for which he served a 12-month sentence.
Next Steps in Legal Proceedings
Given the severity of his actions and past offenses, the case has been referred to Maidstone Crown Court for sentencing. The judge placed Atherton under an interim driving ban until the court date is established.
Defense’s Argument
In his defense, Simon Pettican highlighted that Atherton had taken responsibility by pleading guilty at the first opportunity. He noted that, despite periods of custody, Atherton had not committed offenses in the last three years.
As this case unfolds, many are awaiting the decision of the crown court regarding appropriate sentencing for the series of serious offenses committed by Atherton.
