Ex-Liverpool Star Faces Bankruptcy Sells Champions League Medal to Stay Afloat

Steve Finnan, a former Liverpool footballer, is grappling with a potential bankruptcy as a result of a lengthy legal dispute with his brother. The conflict over a failed property venture has spanned nearly a decade.

Legal Battles and Financial Struggles

Finnan, who made over 100 appearances for Liverpool, initially took legal action against his brother Sean in 2016. This was prompted by concerns regarding the management of their property business. In 2018, the UK High Court awarded him a £4 million settlement. Unfortunately, Finnan never received this money because Sean was declared bankrupt in 2019.

Failed Claims and Rising Debts

  • Finnan has faced several court disputes, including a recent £6 million negligence claim against his legal representatives.
  • He has accrued significant legal bills that remain unpaid.

To alleviate his financial burdens, the 49-year-old has sold his 2005 Champions League winners medal and several match-worn shirts. Despite these efforts, he is still unable to meet his financial obligations and is now confronting a bankruptcy petition at Central London County Court.

Bankruptcy Proceedings

A bankruptcy petition allows the court to seize assets to settle debts. Earlier this month, Finnan sought to appeal the petition, but the attempt was dismissed by a judge who indicated that Finnan was merely trying to postpone proceedings.

As of now, a date has not been scheduled for his formal bankruptcy hearing. Steve Finnan remains a prominent figure in football circles, especially for his contributions during his time at Liverpool and his 50-plus appearances for the Irish national team.
