Clean-Air Campaign Calls on Parents to Stop Idling Engines at School Gates
From November 17 to November 21, 2025, schools across County Sligo will participate in Clean Air Week. This initiative is organized by An Taisce’s Green-Schools Ireland and aims to enhance air quality around educational institutions. This year marks the seventh edition of Clean Air Week, focusing on learning and action to improve the air quality within school environments.
Engaging Students and Communities
During Clean Air Week, students, teachers, and school communities will investigate the air quality surrounding their schools. They will emphasize the significance of reducing vehicle idling and promoting cleaner transport options during school commutes.
No Idling Campaign
A key element of the campaign is the No Idling initiative. Drivers are encouraged to turn off their engines while parked outside schools. This effort aims to diminish harmful emissions and enhance the air students breathe.
Resources and Support
Green-Schools provides numerous resources to support schools in their Clean Air Week activities. These resources include:
- Downloadable posters
- Toolkits for organizing events
- Guidance on raising awareness about air quality
Competitions and Incentives
The Clean Air Week program also features competitions and cash prizes for primary and secondary schools. These incentives encourage active participation from students and promote sustainable commuting habits.
Building Positive Habits
By engaging in Clean Air Week, schools help foster positive habits among students. Encouraging walking, cycling, or scooting to school contributes to healthier lifestyles and a cleaner environment. Moreover, turning off engines when parked plays a crucial role in reducing air pollution.
Community Responsibility
Participating in Clean Air Week reinforces each school’s commitment to sustainability and health. It highlights the importance of community responsibility in improving local air quality.
As schools embark on this week’s activities, they not only protect the environment but also promote a healthier future for their students and community. The call to action is clear: every small effort counts in the pursuit of cleaner air.
