Enniskillen Castle Illuminates to Honor Contributions of Men

Today, Enniskillen Castle will shine blue in recognition of International Men’s Day. This initiative was unanimously approved by the Fermanagh and Omagh District Council, following a motion by Sinn Féin aimed at acknowledging the positive roles of men and boys in society.

Importance of Positive Male Role Models

Councillor Debbie Coyle proposed this motion, emphasizing the significance of positive male figures. She pointed out that many men and boys face unique challenges, such as high suicide rates and mental health issues. Coyle stated, “It is crucial to promote and support initiatives that inspire men and boys to enhance their health and wellbeing.”

Encouraging Diverse Male Representation

  • Promoting role models from various backgrounds
  • Addressing issues of toxic masculinity
  • Fostering healthier perceptions of masculinity

Coyle urged local statutory agencies and community groups to collaborate in highlighting these issues and to celebrate the contributions of men and boys. Councillor Ruaídhrí Lyttle supported her comments, stressing the need to confront negative online influences that affect young males.

Addressing Social Issues on International Men’s Day

SDLP councillor Bernard McGrath added that International Men’s Day is an opportunity to raise awareness of critical issues like abuse, homelessness, and mental health struggles. He called for the promotion of positive role models, emphasizing the importance of everyday men leading honest lives over the glorified portrayals seen in media.

Collaborative Efforts for Positive Change

Alliance councillor Eddie Roofe highlighted that this day serves as a moment to appreciate how men contribute to families, communities, and workplaces. He mentioned the disturbing rates of male suicide and the necessity for a more inclusive view of masculinity.

  • Support for mental health initiatives
  • Promoting kindness and emotional resilience
  • Encouraging respectful interactions among men

Independent councillor Josephine Deehan remarked on the negative portrayal of masculinity on social media, asserting it does not represent the true essence of men. Meanwhile, DUP councillor Shirley Hawkes underscored the undervalued contributions of men and the need for recognition.

This motion received unanimous support from the council, showcasing a collective commitment to fostering positive changes for men and boys in society.
