Danish Energy Agency Invites Bids for Three New Offshore Wind Farms in Denmark

The Danish Energy Agency is actively pursuing the development of three new offshore wind farms. This initiative aims to enhance green energy production and reduce reliance on fossil fuels.

Danish Offshore Wind Farms Overview

The three designated areas for offshore wind farms are:

  • North Sea Mid – a minimum of 1 GW, completion required by the end of 2032
  • Hesselø in the Kattegat – a minimum of 800 MW, completion required by the end of 2032
  • North Sea South – a minimum of 1 GW, completion required by the end of 2034

Collectively, these wind farms are projected to supply green electricity equivalent to the consumption of approximately three million homes across Denmark and Europe.

Support Scheme for Developers

The offshore wind projects will operate under a two-sided capability-based contract for difference (CfD). This support structure guarantees a fixed price for electricity generated, mitigating risks for developers associated with fluctuating market prices.

The Danish government has set a payment cap of DKK 55.2 billion, including VAT, for this initiative.

Requirements for Bidders

Bidders must adhere to various sustainability and social responsibility standards, including:

  • Recyclability of turbine blades
  • Regulations to prevent social dumping
  • Nature-inclusive design for the Hesselø offshore wind farm

Additionally, the Danish Energy Agency reserves the right to request compliance documentation related to cybersecurity from the winning bidders to address potential security threats.

Background and Future Steps

This tender process is a continuation of previous offshore wind tenders launched in 2024, which included six areas. After receiving no bids for those areas, the agency conducted market dialogues, leading to two political agreements in 2025.

The current round of tenders offers a total capacity of 2.8 GW, following feedback from the market. Interested parties must submit their tenders for North Sea Mid and Hesselø by spring 2026, while the deadline for North Sea South is set for autumn 2028.

For more details, the tender materials can be accessed through EU Supply. Please note that there may be up to a 48-hour delay before these materials become available following their publication.
