New Funding Scheme Launched for 2026 Biodiversity Projects

A new funding initiative has been launched to support local biodiversity projects across Ireland. The Local Biodiversity Action Fund 2026 has allocated €3 million for local councils to engage in biodiversity research, habitat restoration, and the management of invasive species.

Overview of the Local Biodiversity Action Fund 2026

The fund, administered by the National Parks and Wildlife Service, is designed to assist local authorities in implementing actions outlined in Ireland’s fourth National Biodiversity Action Plan. Established in 2018, the program has previously allocated over €13 million to local councils within seven years.

Previous Achievements

In 2025 alone, the fund supported 262 projects across all 31 local authorities. These projects tackled various initiatives, including:

  • Surveys of rare species
  • Control measures for invasive flora and fauna
  • Restoration of threatened habitats

Notable projects from the last funding round included:

  • The Hare’s Corner initiative, where seven councils collaborated to create ponds, woodlands, and orchards for wildlife.
  • Surveys of Nightjar populations advanced by Wexford County Council.
  • Ecological enhancements in Cork City as part of the All Island Pollinator Plan.

Focus Areas for 2026

Minister of State for Nature, Heritage and Biodiversity, Christopher O’Sullivan, emphasized that the 2026 scheme aims to channel €3 million directly into local communities. He highlighted significant past grants that have supported the protection of rare species, including Barn Owls and Lesser Horseshoe Bats.

James Browne, Minister for Housing, Local Government and Heritage, also noted that the fund fosters collaborations between councils and communities. These efforts not only enhance biodiversity in shared spaces but also contribute positively to public health and wellbeing.

Application Details

The application deadline for this funding opportunity is set for February 5, 2026. Local councils are encouraged to submit proposals that align with the objectives of the National Biodiversity Action Plan.

Examples of Past Projects Funded

Here are some representative projects that received funding in 2025:

County Project Description
Carlow Management of the Urban Pollinator Network, including trials for goat grazing and native planting.
Cavan Monitoring and conservation of Barn Owls with nesting boxes and citizen-science mapping.
Cork City Removal of Himalayan balsam and native species restoration.
