Sask NDP Urges Expansion of Treatment Beds Amid Rising Overdose Crisis in Major Cities
The Saskatchewan New Democratic Party (NDP) is advocating for an expansion of treatment beds in response to a growing overdose crisis affecting major cities such as Saskatoon and Regina. This initiative comes as these cities are grappling with a marked increase in overdose incidents.
Overdose Crisis in Saskatchewan
The health ministry recently issued alerts regarding the toxic drug supply in Saskatoon and Regina, highlighting the presence of dangerous substances such as fentanyl and benzodiazepines. The Saskatoon fire department reported more than 100 overdoses and two fatalities since November 11.
Call for Immediate Action
- NDP MLA Betty Nippi-Albright emphasized the urgency of the situation, stating, “It’s needed today so that another life does not die and another community is not mourning.”
- She previously called for a substantial increase in available services, including detox beds and sober living accommodations.
- Last month’s throne speech indicated that the Saskatchewan government plans to implement The Compassionate Intervention Act to permit involuntary treatment for individuals posing a danger to themselves or others.

Chantel Huel, who has overcome a two-decade battle with addiction, shared her insight during a press event in Saskatoon. She advocates for incorporating the perspectives of those with lived experience in addiction recovery into policy-making. “They’ve never lived on the streets,” Huel noted, highlighting the disconnect between policymakers and the realities faced by individuals in addiction.
Current Treatment Initiatives
The upcoming 2025-26 provincial budget includes a commitment to add 500 beds in addiction treatment centers across the province. This expansion aims to address the pressing need for additional resources and ensure comprehensive support for those struggling with addiction.
As Saskatchewan continues to confront the challenges of addiction and overdose, the NDP’s push for more treatment facilities reflects a growing recognition of the urgent need for effective solutions.
