The upcoming Christmas Bonus, confirmed by the Department of Social Protection, is aimed at supporting nearly 1.5 million long-term social welfare recipients. This initiative is part of Budget 2026 and is expected to ease financial burdens during the festive season.
Christmas Bonus Distribution Date
The exact date for the Christmas Bonus payment is not yet announced. However, recipients can anticipate receiving their bonus in December 2025, likely during the week commencing Monday, December 1.
Who Is Eligible for the Christmas Bonus?
While the bonus will benefit many, it will not extend to all social welfare recipients. Eligibility is limited to those on long-term social welfare schemes. This means individuals receiving short-term jobseeker’s payments or those with recent benefit claims may not qualify.

- Carer’s Allowance and Carer’s Benefit
- Community Employment
- Deserted Wife’s Allowance and Benefit
- Daily Expenses Allowance (12 months or more)
- Disability Allowance
- Disablement Benefit
- Domiciliary Care Allowance
- Farm Assist
- Guardian’s Payment (Contributory and Non-Contributory)
- Illness Benefit (12 months or more)
- Invalidity Pension
- Job Initiative Scheme
- Jobseeker’s Allowance (312 days or more)
- Jobseeker’s Transitional Payment
- Magdalene Commission Scheme
- Death Benefit Scheme (Occupational Injuries Scheme)

Additional Social Welfare Measures
Alongside the Christmas Bonus, the government is also introducing several enhancements:
- €10 weekly increase in core social welfare payments starting January 2026.
- Increased income disregard for the Carer’s Allowance.
- €20 increase in the Domiciliary Care Allowance, raising it to €380 per month.
- Expansion of the Back to School Clothing and Footwear Allowance to include two and three-year-olds.
- Fuel Allowance threshold increase to include Working Family Payment recipients, with rates rising from €33 to €38 weekly.
Minister for Social Protection, Dara Calleary, emphasized that these measures, valued at over €1.15 billion, aim to significantly improve the lives of those affected and their communities.
