Netherlands: EBS Expands Eco-Friendly Fleet with 73 New BYD Electric Buses in Zeeland
EBS, a Dutch public transport operator, has announced an expansion of its eco-friendly fleet with the order of 73 BYD electric buses. This initiative aims to enhance sustainable public transport services in Zeeland, starting from December 2026.
Details of the New Electric Bus Fleet
The new fleet includes:
- 64 electric buses measuring 12 metres
- 9 electric buses measuring 15 metres
The first batch of these electric buses is expected to arrive in the summer of 2026 and will operate under the brand REIZEN DOOR ZEELAND.
Design and Features
The design of the new buses took into account feedback from passengers, drivers, and stakeholder groups. The key features of the vehicles are as follows:
- Purple upholstery for seating
- Complimentary Wi-Fi for passengers
- USB-C charging points at every seat
- Strong colour contrasts on grab rails and stop buttons for better visibility
- Dedicated wheelchair space located opposite the rear door
Sustainable Public Transport Goals
Jan Kees Korteweg, COO of EBS, emphasized the significance of this order in striving for sustainable transportation solutions. He stated that the BYD buses align perfectly with the company’s mission to enhance passenger comfort and ease of use while ensuring emission-free transit options for Zeeland.
Current Electric Bus Operations
EBS has made considerable strides in sustainable transport, already operating over 500 electric vehicles across various Dutch regions. The recent addition of 43 BYD electric buses into service in the Haaglanden-Streek concession in September 2025 demonstrates the company’s commitment to expanding its electric fleet.
Future Developments
In the upcoming months, EBS plans to collaborate with provincial authorities, municipalities, and partners to prepare depot facilities and charging infrastructure for this new fleet of electric buses. This strategic move underlines EBS’s dedication to advancing environmentally friendly public transportation in Zeeland.
