Mother of Formerly Conjoined Twins Hassan and Hussein Benhaffaf Wins Carer of the Year Award

The recognition of outstanding caregivers is essential for appreciating their invaluable contributions. Recently, Angie Benhaffaf, a dedicated mother from County Cork, was honored as Lidl Family Carer of the Year for 2025 during an event held at the College Green Hotel in Dublin.

Celebrating a Remarkable Journey

Angie Benhaffaf received this award for her unwavering dedication to her twin sons, Hassan and Hussein. Born conjoined in 2009, the twins now face various medical challenges, having undergone over 75 surgeries throughout their lives. At nearly 16 years old, this achievement highlights their resilience and the strength of their family.

A Heartfelt Acceptance

During the awards ceremony, Angie expressed her deep gratitude. “I feel quite overwhelmed,” she shared, highlighting the significance of the recognition. The nomination by her 18-year-old daughter made the moment even more special for her. “That was the overall prize for me,” she stated.

Angie dedicated her award to all caregivers in Ireland, acknowledging the challenges and rewards of their work. “It’s not an easy job to care for someone you love,” she emphasized, but the fulfillment it brings is unparalleled.

Inspiring Achievements of Hassan and Hussein

  • Age: Nearly 16 years
  • Medical background: Conjoined at birth, shared organs except for hearts and one leg each

Community Contributions

Over the past decade, Angie and her children have made significant contributions to children’s charities, raising €105,000 through an annual event called Cork Wears Red. This event underscores their commitment to giving back to the community.

Support for Family Carers

Family Carers Ireland, the organizing body of the awards, supports countless caregivers. Currently, more than half a million people in Ireland provide over 19 million hours of care each week. This incredible contribution is valued at over €20 billion annually.
