Running Groups Express Concern Over Dublin Marathon 2024 Ballot Results
Running groups across Ireland are expressing concern over the lottery-based ballot results for the upcoming 2026 Dublin Marathon. With a staggering 47,000 applications received, only 22,500 entries were available, leaving many disappointed. The success rate stood at under 40%, with only 17,200 applications successful.
Dublin Marathon 2026: Overview of Entries and Concerns
Of the 22,500 positions, 5,300 entries are reserved for charity runners, international partners, and elite competitors. This year’s record application figures have raised questions about the fairness of the lottery system.
- Applicants: 47,000
- Successful Entries: 17,200
- Success Rate: Less than 40%
- Charity and Elite Slots: 5,300
Kevin English, a Sligo-based running coach, noted the growing disappointment among his runners. He mentioned that only about one in five received favorable results from the lottery, indicating a significant level of dissatisfaction. English suggested prioritizing entry for runners who participate in the Dublin Marathon countdown series as a way to reward dedicated participants.
Changes in Entry Policy
Notably, the organizers have eliminated the previous priority entry system, which guaranteed spots for past participants. This move was intended to boost representation among women and encourage more first-time runners. However, many participants feel that the new approach may not adequately address the high demand.
Participants were charged a €5 administration fee for entering the ballot, which raised €149,000 from those who were ultimately unsuccessful. English criticized this practice, comparing it to other major marathons like London and New York, which do not impose similar fees. “The €5 to enter the ballot is a significant issue,” he remarked.
The Impact of Membership and Participation
Running coach Billy Porter, affiliated with Parnell Athletics club, echoed concerns about the ballot system. He highlighted that Athletics Ireland recently registered a peak of 75,078 members, an all-time high. He argued that the national marathon championship should allow entry for all Athletics Ireland members, emphasizing its importance in maintaining the spirit of competition.
- All-time Membership Peak: 75,078
- Current Discontent: Entry access for active members
Porter pointed out the historical significance of the Dublin Marathon serving as the national championships while stressing the need for more equitable access within the competitive running community.
Record Demand for Running Events
The current surge in interest for running events contributes to the high demand for marathon entries. Many popular events, including major marathons in cities like Brighton and Paris, are already sold out. English noted that the Dublin Marathon’s excellent organization and local support make it an appealing choice for runners.
“Running is experiencing unprecedented growth,” he stated. “Participants often prefer the convenience of a local marathon, and many perform well in Dublin compared to other renowned courses.”
As the date approaches for the Dublin Marathon 2026, the implications of the lottery ballot continue to unfold, leaving many hopeful for changes that may better accommodate the ever-growing running community.
