An extensive search operation is underway for a 76-year-old British tourist who fell overboard from the Marella Explorer 2 near the Canary Islands. The incident occurred on Thursday morning as the cruise ship was sailing towards La Gomera.

The Spanish coastguard received an alert about the man overboard situation at approximately 9:48 AM. At the time, the ship was located 16.5 miles northwest of Punta Teno, en route from Funchal, Madeira, to San Sebastian de La Gomera.

Marella Cruises expressed deep sorrow regarding the incident. A representative stated, “Our thoughts are with the individual and their loved ones during this difficult time.” The cruise line is providing support to the family affected by this tragedy.
Passengers reported that the alarm sounded around 10 AM, indicating a man overboard. Lesley-Anne Kelly, a witness, described the moment during breakfast when the announcement was made. Crew members immediately began search efforts, and the coastguard arrived within half an hour.
Search Operations
The Marella Explorer 2 remained in position while search operations commenced, deploying both maritime and aerial resources. A helicopter, two search vessels, and an aircraft were involved in the initial search. Later, a Rio Guadiato patrol boat from La Palma joined the operation.
As night fell, the captain announced that the search would be paused until daylight, a decision that left passengers feeling somber. Witnesses aboard reported that several people had seen the man enter the water, making the incident all the more distressing.
