UK set to enforce new travel permit regulations for Canadian visitors

Starting February 25, 2026, Canadian visitors will be required to obtain a travel permit to enter the United Kingdom. This electronic travel authorization (eTA) is necessary to legally enter the country, or Canadians risk being denied boarding.

New Requirements for Canadian Travelers

Initially announced earlier this year, the eTA requirement will now be strictly enforced. British authorities have emphasized the importance of allowing visitors to adapt to these new rules.

  • The eTA is not a visa; it is intended for Canadian passport holders who do not need a visa to enter the U.K.
  • Travelers can use the eTA for short-term visits lasting up to six months.
  • The fee for acquiring an eTA is £16, roughly equivalent to $30 CAD.

Application Process

Canadians can apply for their eTA through an official government website or the U.K. eTA app. It’s advisable to use official channels to avoid potential online scams.

Processing Time

While many applicants receive decisions almost instantly, it is recommended to allow up to three business days for processing. Once approved, the eTA is valid for multiple entries over two years, or until the associated passport expires.

Important Considerations

  • Approval of an eTA does not guarantee entry into the U.K.
  • Canadians with dual British citizenship must present a valid British passport or a “certificate of entitlement” to enter the U.K.
  • Travelers with layovers in the U.K. that do not involve customs will not require an eTA.

Canadian passport holders currently do not need a tourist visa for visits of up to six months. However, different permits are required for business or student purposes.

Similar International Practices

The U.K.’s eTA system mirrors similar initiatives in other countries, including Canada and the E.U., which have their own electronic travel authorization programs. Notably, the European Travel Information and Authorization System (ETIAS) is expected to be established for Canadian and other visa-exempt nationals traveling to Europe in the near future.
