Canadian PM’s Office and Border Services Clarify Non-Involvement in Kneecap Ban

The Canadian Prime Minister’s Office and the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) have clarified their non-involvement in the recent ban on the Irish language band Kneecap. The announcement banning the group from entering Canada was initially made by Canadian Liberal MP Vince Gasparro on September 19, 2023. This claim cited terror offense charges against one member of the band but has since come under scrutiny.

Background of the Ban

Kneecap’s ban was linked to charges against Liam Óg Ó hAnnaidh, who allegedly showed support for Hezbollah at a performance in London. Gasparro stated that this conduct justified the group’s ineligibility to enter Canada. He labeled their actions as dangerous endorsements of violence and hate, rather than legitimate artistic expression.

Legal Developments

On September 26, 2023, Ó hAnnaidh’s terrorism case was dismissed due to a technical error in the charge against him. Despite this, the ban was still announced, causing significant backlash from the band. Kneecap responded to Gasparro’s comments by describing them as “wholly untrue and deeply malicious,” indicating they would pursue legal action.

Current Status of Kneecap’s Entry

• Kneecap is currently barred from entering Canada, but the reasons differ from the initial announcement.
• The Department of Citizenship and Immigration cited compliance issues with Ó hAnnaidh’s application.
• Ó hAnnaidh’s electronic travel authorization was cancelled in August 2025 due to incomplete information on his application.

Future Applications

Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) stated that Ó hAnnaidh remains eligible to reapply, and compliance issues typically resolve over time. Meanwhile, applications for other band members, Naoise Ó Cairealláin and JJ Ó Dochartaigh, are under review. They were advised not to travel to Canada until further notice from IRCC.
