Former LA Zoo Custodian Austin Kolodney Achieves Success with New Movie Dead Man’s Wire Transitioning to Screenwriting
Austin Kolodney, a former custodian at the Los Angeles Zoo, is making his mark in Hollywood with his debut film, “Dead Man’s Wire.” This film, directed by Gus Van Sant, tells a compelling true story from 1977 about a president of a mortgage company who is taken hostage by a disgruntled client. The client believes he was cheated out of his money and demands an apology in a dramatic hostage scenario.
A Journey from Custodian to Screenwriter
Kolodney’s journey to film success has been anything but straightforward. After experiencing a difficult period following a writers’ strike, he found himself struggling financially. During this time, he took a custodial job at the Los Angeles Zoo, which turned out to be a transformative experience. “I didn’t realize how much this place would change my life,” he shared.
The zoo not only offered him employment but also a sense of community. Kolodney appreciated the bonds he formed with his colleagues and the lessons he learned about animals and city life. “It was really special,” he remarked, looking back on his time there.
Support from Family
Kolodney attributes much of his determination to his supportive family. His grandfather suggested the city job, while his mother, a cinema enthusiast, instilled a strong work ethic in him. She experienced a proud moment at the Toronto Film Festival, where she saw “Dead Man’s Wire” screened for the first time.
Anticipation of Film Release
“Dead Man’s Wire” is poised for an exciting release schedule. An Oscar-qualifying week will commence at The Grove in Los Angeles on December 12. The film will officially open in the city on January 9, followed by a nationwide rollout the following week. Kolodney expresses hope that a successful opening will lead to further opportunities in filmmaking, especially as he aims to pay off student loans.
Future Aspirations
Looking ahead, Kolodney has set his sights on directing. With his newfound success in screenwriting, he is eager to expand his contributions to the film industry. “If this movie does well, hopefully, I’ll get another movie job,” he said, reflecting on his aspirations.
“Dead Man’s Wire” promises to be a captivating film, showcasing Kolodney’s talent and the compelling story that inspired it. As he prepares for the upcoming release, his journey stands as a testament to perseverance and passion in pursuing dreams within Hollywood.
