Waterford Rail Services Fully Operational for Christmas Amid Pause in Flood-Defence Works
The Waterford Rail Services are set to remain fully operational during the Christmas period. This comes as flood-defence works, which aim to improve rail infrastructure, pause for the festive season. The construction to protect the rail line near Waterford began on August 25. However, works will resume on January 5, 2026.
Impact of Flood-Defence Works
The ongoing flood-defence initiative addresses historical flooding issues in the approach to Waterford. This includes the installation of sheet piled walls, impermeable trenches, a drainage network, and two pumping stations.
Service Alterations
Service adjustments will take effect after the Christmas period. From January 5 to March 26, 2026, the following changes will apply:
- The 7:20 AM and 10:15 AM Dublin Heuston to Waterford services will terminate at Kilkenny.
- Passengers will have bus transfers from Kilkenny to Thomastown and Waterford.
- The 11:00 AM and 1:05 PM Waterford to Dublin Heuston services will have bus transfers as well.
- The 9:45 AM Limerick Junction to Waterford service will terminate at Carrick-on-Suir, with a bus transfer to Waterford.
Only two of the eight daily services between Waterford and Dublin will be affected during weekdays. Weekend services will continue without disruption.
Winterval Festival and Travel Options
As travelers head to Waterford for the Winterval festival, they can take advantage of extensive rail options. There are eight trains daily each way between Waterford and Dublin Heuston. This increases to nine services on Fridays. An evening service at 8:20 PM from Waterford to Dublin Heuston is available from Monday to Saturday, catering to those attending Winterval events.
Future Developments
Looking ahead, the Waterford North Quays public transport initiatives are funded by various government bodies. These developments will enhance rail service through the new Waterford Plunkett Station, set to open in 2027, and improve connectivity to Waterford’s commercial core.
