In a somber display of respect, flags outside the central government offices were lowered to half-mast. Hong Kong’s leader, John Lee, along with several officials and civil servants, gathered to honor the victims, dressed in black attire.

Condolence books have been made available at 18 locations across the city for the public to express their sympathies. Mourners and families have begun laying flowers at the site of the residential complex, gathering to support one another in their grief.

Identification and Ongoing Search Efforts

As of Friday, only 39 victims have been officially identified. This has left many families in anguish as they view photographs of their lost loved ones captured by rescue teams. The search for survivors has ended, but authorities continue to look for remains.

The Hong Kong government is establishing a fund of 300 million Hong Kong dollars (approximately $39 million) to assist the affected residents. Local communities have rallied to support victims by distributing food and essential supplies, with numerous volunteers stepping up to help.

Investigation and Arrests

Local authorities have made at least 11 arrests in connection with the blaze. Among those detained are two directors and an engineering consultant from the company responsible for maintenance at the towers. They face charges of manslaughter for allegedly using unsafe materials during renovations.

The towers, located in the Tai Po district, were undergoing renovations. The presence of highly flammable bamboo scaffolding and green mesh has been linked to the rapid spread of the fire. Most victims were discovered in two of the eight towers, with extensive damage reported across seven of them.

Historical Context and Comparisons

This catastrophic event is reminiscent of the tragic Grenfell Tower fire in London in 2017, which resulted in 72 fatalities. Both incidents highlight issues related to flammable materials and neglected safety standards.

The survivors’ group, Grenfell United, expressed solidarity on social media, extending their condolences to those affected by the fire in Hong Kong. They emphasized that the communities impacted by such tragedies should know they are not alone.
