Winter Storm Alert: Expect Heavy Snow and Hazardous Travel This Weekend
The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Storm Warning for Northeast Indiana and Northwest Ohio. This warning is in effect from 7 am Saturday until 7 pm Sunday. During this period, residents can expect hazardous travel conditions due to heavy snowfall.
Storm Timing and Snowfall Predictions
The storm is anticipated to begin Saturday between noon and 2 pm. While initial forecasts suggested a start around 10 am, updates indicate a later onset. The snowfall will conclude by sunrise on Sunday, with the possibility of light lake effect snow in the afternoon.
If you plan to travel on Saturday morning, conditions should be manageable until you reach Northwest Indiana, where snow will start between 8 am and 10 am. Conditions will worsen as you proceed westward.
Heavy Snow Expected
The heaviest snowfall, with rates of 1-2 inches per hour, is predicted between 6 pm and 11 pm Saturday. Roads are expected to become snow-covered, and visibility will significantly decrease. As temperatures drop overnight, there may be a brief transition to rain or drizzle.
Snow Accumulation Forecast
Snowfall amounts have been revised and vary across the region:
- 6-8 inches: Northern Allen and Wabash counties.
- 4-6 inches: Most of Van Wert, Wells, and Adams counties.
- 2-4 inches: Southern Wells, Adams, and Van Wert counties, along with all of Jay County.
Travel Risks
Travelers should be aware of slippery roads and reduced visibility. The evening and night on Sunday are expected to bring much colder temperatures, leading to the potential for refreezing of wet spots and slush on the roads. Monday morning’s commute may be challenging due to icy conditions.
Forecast Beyond the Weekend
The cold weather is expected to persist, with temperatures consistently remaining below freezing. Highs will stay muted, with lows dipping into the teens. Midweek could bring wind chills falling below zero, meaning the snow accumulated over the weekend could remain for an extended period.
Stay warm and safe during these winter conditions, and if possible, enjoy the seasonal snowfall.
