Western Rail Corridor prioritized in new transport plan as N17 advances alongside Eastern Garavogue Bridge development

Minister Seán Canney has announced that the Western Rail Corridor, connecting Claremorris to Athenry via Tuam, has been recognized as a significant project within the new transport plan. Scheduled for completion by 2030, the project is a result of extensive efforts to ensure the West is adequately represented in infrastructure developments. Enabling works for this corridor are expected to begin shortly.

Expansion Plans for the Western Rail Corridor

The possibility of extending the Western Rail Corridor northward to Sligo is also under consideration. The transport plan includes various enhancements aimed at improving the rail network:

  • New passing loops on the Sligo line, Westport/Ballina, Limerick to Waterford, and the Dublin-Belfast Northern line.
  • Additional platforms at Limerick Junction to support train services between Galway/Ennis and Waterford.
  • New platforms for stations on Galway and Sligo routes to enhance rail resilience.

Minister Canney, tasked with overseeing the All-Island Strategic Rail Review, mentioned that this review proposes transformative options for the West and North-West. Among the considerations is double-tracking between Athenry and Galway, forming part of a long-term vision to enhance rail capacity in these regions.

N17 and Eastern Garavogue Bridge Developments

Minister Marian Harkin has praised the Department of Transport’s progress in advancing the N17 from Knock to Collooney and the Eastern Garavogue Bridge. Construction on both projects, along with the Carrick-on-Shannon bypass, is expected to commence by 2030.

  • The N17 will undergo significant upgrades to improve safety and connectivity.
  • The Eastern Garavogue Bridge and its approach roads will also see construction starting by 2030.
  • The N15 from Sligo will be advanced toward delivery-ready status within the next five years.

These initiatives are seen as critical for balanced regional development, which has been a long-standing concern for local leaders. Minister Harkin highlighted that the N17 is a vital national route that has suffered from outdated infrastructure for years.

Investment Outlook for Transport in the Northwest

Investment in Sligo and Leitrim is crucial as it represents a step towards establishing a robust transport system for the future. Minister Frank Feighan emphasized that these projects would enhance safety, reduce travel times, and foster stronger communities.

Project Expected Completion Details
Western Rail Corridor By 2030 Connecting Claremorris to Athenry with future extension to Sligo
N17 Upgrade By 2030 Significant improvements to enhance safety and accessibility
Eastern Garavogue Bridge By 2030 Construction alongside approach roads

The ongoing transport investments are bolstered by dedicated government funding, ensuring that regional development is a priority. This marks a significant shift in infrastructure policies, aiming to deliver lasting improvements for the communities of Sligo, Leitrim, and South Donegal.

As stated by Minister Feighan, these upgrades will enable the northwest region to achieve greater competitiveness and connectivity, setting the stage for future growth.
