Münster District Government Boosts Innovative Projects at FH Münster

The Münster District Government has launched innovative projects aimed at enhancing climate protection and regional collaboration. On November 28, 2023, Government President Andreas Bothe announced funding for two significant initiatives during a ceremony held at the District Government offices in Münster.

Münster District Initiatives for Climate Protection

Digital Heat Transition: F|Heat.connect

The first project, titled “F|Heat.connect,” received approximately 1.1 million euros in funding, covering 90% of the project costs. This initiative aims to develop a digital planning tool tailored to the specific conditions of the Münsterland region. The tool is designed to assist local communities and regional stakeholders in efficiently implementing municipal heating plans.

  • The project bridges the gap between initial concept and technical planning.
  • It combines scientific analysis with open data sources and practical expertise.
  • The goal is to enhance supply security and affordability for residents while accelerating local energy transitions.

Innovative Wastewater Treatment: KlärKraftWende (K²W)

The second initiative, “KlärKraftWende (K²W),” has been allocated around 647,000 euros, also covering 90% of its costs. This project focuses on transforming municipal wastewater treatment plants in Münsterland into active contributors to the regional energy transition.

  • Initially, the research team at FH Münster will study four example facilities.
  • The aim is to explore how renewable energy, waste heat utilization, energy storage technologies, and green hydrogen can be combined efficiently.
  • The outcomes are expected to increase energy efficiency, reduce operational costs, and lower greenhouse gas emissions.

A newly established “Task Force KlärEnergie Münsterland” will facilitate collaboration among municipalities, utility providers, businesses, and academia, ensuring effective knowledge transfer throughout the region.

Project Timeline and Background

Both projects are set to officially commence on December 1, 2025. Their funding comes from the Regio.NRW – Transformation initiative, which supports projects that foster regional partnerships, drive innovation, and provide sustainable solutions to societal challenges. This initiative encompasses a wide range of efforts, including knowledge transfer from universities, climate-friendly energy systems, and regional climate adaptation.

The initiative is jointly administered by the Ministry of Economic Affairs, Industry, Climate Protection and Energy (MWIKE) and the Ministry of Environment, Nature Conservation and Transport (MUNV).
