Aussie Golden Girl and Broadcasting Legend Achieve Historic Wins After 14-Year Wait
Australian athlete Nicola Olyslagers achieved a remarkable milestone by being named the World Athletics Female Field Athlete of the Year at a prestigious gala in Monaco. This recognition highlights her outstanding performance in a season marked by significant achievements, including triumphs at both the outdoor and indoor championships.
At 28 years old, Olyslagers, hailing from North Gosford, New South Wales, not only captured the high jump title at the World Championships but also set a new Oceanian record by clearing 2.04 metres. Her victory secured her the Diamond League trophy and established her as the world’s number one women’s high jumper.
A Historic Win Marks a Career Best
Olyslagers’ accolade comes 14 years after another Australian, Sally Pearson, won similar honors in 2011. Reflecting on her journey from working in a café at age 20 to standing on an international stage, Olyslagers spoke of the dreams that fueled her ambition. “It took a lot of belief to even think about that,” she said during her acceptance speech.
Broadcasting Legend Honored
Alongside Olyslagers, Bruce McAvaney, a renowned Australian broadcaster, received the President’s Award for his extensive contributions to athletics over five decades. His recognition adds to the celebration of Australian sports at the gala.
