BYD Recalls 88,981 Qin Plus DM-i Sedans Over Battery Concerns
BYD is initiating a significant recall of 88,981 Qin Plus DM-i hybrid sedans in China. This action stems from concerns over potential limitations in battery power output. The announcement was made by the State Administration for Market Regulation (SAMR). The recall is effective immediately.
Details of the Recall
This recall includes two production batches:
- 52,890 units manufactured between September 26, 2021, and September 23, 2023.
- 36,091 units produced between January 7, 2021, and September 30, 2022.
Some of these vehicles may exhibit limited power output from their battery packs due to production inconsistencies. In critical situations, this issue could lead to loss of operation in pure electric mode, raising safety concerns.
Response and Remedial Actions
The recall is a part of SAMR’s ongoing defect investigation. To address the battery issues, BYD will provide an over-the-air (OTA) software update to dealers. This update will allow for better vehicle diagnostics. If the software identifies battery abnormalities, a warning indicator will illuminate on the dashboard.
Owners will be prompted to visit dealerships for free battery pack replacements if necessary.
Recent Recall History
This is not the first recall for BYD in recent months. Just last month, the company recalled 115,783 units of its Tang and Yuan Pro electric vehicles, raising questions about the quality of their vehicles following rapid growth.
Sales Performance
Amid these challenges, BYD has reported strong sales figures. From January to October, the company sold 3,701,852 vehicles, reflecting a 13.88% increase year-on-year. BYD continues to hold the title of the leading Battery Electric Vehicle (BEV) seller globally, capturing a 15.4% market share in the third quarter.
Despite a decline in sales compared to the previous quarter, BYD’s position in the industry remains strong.
