Roberto Contreras: 24,000 Votes Won’t Decide This Election

Tegucigalpa – Roberto Contreras, president of the Central Executive Council of the Liberal Party and mayor of San Pedro Sula, commented on the preliminary results of the general elections held on November 30. He emphasized that neither the Liberal Party nor the National Party should celebrate based on the current data.

Election Results Analysis

According to the first official results, 33% of the Preliminary Electoral Results Transmission (TREP) has been reported. Contreras noted that 56% of the counted votes come from Francisco Morazán, while only 33% are from Cortés. He highlighted that Salvador Nasralla is leading in these areas.

Significance of Vote Margins

“There is no clear trend,” Contreras stated. He added, “If the margin were 10 or 15%, we could infer a winner. However, 24,000 votes do not determine this election.” He expressed concerns about other regions where the Liberal Party reportedly holds an electoral advantage, such as Atlántida, Islas de la Bahía, Yoro, and Choluteca, which have not yet returned full results.

Voter Participation Concerns

Contreras also pointed out that it appears nearly 50% of the electorate did not engage in the election process. Current estimates suggest that around 3.1 million people participated. However, 2 million votes are still unaccounted for in the results released by the National Electoral Council (CNE).

  • Election Date: November 30
  • Percentage of TREP reported: 33%
  • Vote count from Francisco Morazán: 56%
  • Vote count from Cortés: 33%
  • Estimates of total participants: 3.1 million
  • Uncounted votes: 2 million

Despite waiting for further results, Contreras is confident in his position regarding the mayoralty. He refrained from declaring a winner in the presidential race, urging patience as the counting process continues.
