IMD Issues Orange Alert: Cyclone Ditwah Closes Chennai Schools Today

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert as Cyclone Ditwah intensifies, predicting heavy rainfall for Tamil Nadu. On December 1, significant weather events are expected to impact various coastal districts. This warning comes as the low-pressure system over the southwest Bay of Bengal develops further.

Impact on Schools in Tamil Nadu

In response to the severe weather conditions, all schools in Chennai and several other districts are closed today. This decision affects educational institutions in:

  • Mayiladuthurai

The Tamil Nadu government has declared a holiday for all educational institutions to prioritize student safety amid heavy rainfall and waterlogging triggered by Cyclone Ditwah.

Alongside the orange alert, the IMD has also issued a yellow alert for several other districts in Tamil Nadu, forecasting isolated heavy rainfall. The affected areas include:

Puducherry Schools and Fisherman Warnings

Puducherry is also bracing for heavy rains. Education Minister A. Namassivayam announced that all schools in the union territory will remain closed in light of the adverse weather conditions.

Furthermore, the IMD has issued a warning for fishermen in the coastal regions of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry. Squally winds are expected, with speeds reaching 55-65 km/h, gusting up to 75 km/h. These conditions are forecasted to gradually decrease by the morning of December 1.
