Chicago Snow Forecast: Monday PM Commute Impacted; O’Hare, Midway Recovering from Cancellations

Chicago is bracing for more snowfall on Monday, as residents continue to recover from a significant winter storm that struck over the weekend. The city experienced severe weather conditions, including fog and black ice, creating potential hazards for commuters during the morning hours.

Chicago Snow Forecast Details

According to meteorologist Tracy Butler from Emegypt, light snow is anticipated to arrive early Monday afternoon. The forecast indicates:

  • 1 to 2 inches of additional snowfall expected in most areas.
  • Up to 3 inches possible in southern and western neighborhoods.

A Winter Weather Advisory will be in effect from 2 p.m. until midnight. This follows a weekend storm that deposited significant snow, setting records for November.

Record Snowfall in November

O’Hare Airport recorded 8.4 inches of snow on Saturday, marking the snowiest November day in Chicago’s history, as reported by the National Weather Service (NWS).

Airport Recovery Efforts

O’Hare and Midway airports are working to resume normal operations after over 1,300 flight cancellations during the storm. As of 5 a.m. Monday, O’Hare experienced 50 cancellations, while Midway had none. Travelers at these airports are hopeful for a smooth commute without additional delays.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) reported significant delays on Sunday, with departures from O’Hare delayed by nearly an hour on average, and departures from the airport experiencing a 15-minute average delay. Many passengers described their travel experiences as chaotic, with some stuck on flights waiting for hours before being forced to disembark.

Traveler Experiences

Traveler Fran Reynolds shared her frustrating experience: “We had to stop in Denver and heard our cancellation just kept getting pushed back.” This sentiment reflects the challenges faced by many during the holiday travel rush amid adverse weather conditions.

As Chicagoans navigate the aftermath of this winter storm, they are urged to stay updated on weather conditions and travel advisories.
