Toronto prepares for a snowy December kickoff
As December begins, Toronto is experiencing a wintry start marked by snow flurries and frigid temperatures. On Monday morning, residents awoke to a mix of sun and clouds. A 30% chance of flurries was predicted, alongside northwest winds of 20 km/h, gusting up to 40 km/h.
The forecast indicates temperatures reaching a high of -1°C, with wind chill making it feel like -12°C early in the day. By afternoon, the wind chill will rise slightly, making it feel around -3°C. Later in the evening, clouds will cover the sky, and periods of snowfall are expected to commence around midnight.
Snow Accumulation and Overnight Conditions
- Expected snow accumulation: 2 to 4 cm.
- Winds: up to 15 km/h.
- Overnight temperature: -5°C, with wind chills near -11°C.
On Tuesday, lingering snow is forecasted through the morning before cloud cover dominates the skies. Wind speeds are anticipated to remain light, reaching up to 15 km/h, with a daytime high of 1°C. Morning wind chills may make it feel like -8°C. Skies are predicted to clear Tuesday night with temperatures once again dipping to -5°C.
Impact of Winter Weather Across Ontario
Winter weather continues to impact southern Ontario significantly. Snowfall warnings have been issued throughout the region. On Sunday, Hydro One reported several hundred customers without power due to the ongoing storm.
A low-pressure system moving north from the eastern United States is expected to bring additional snow overnight. Southwestern Ontario will be the first to experience snowfall, with light snow spreading from Windsor along the Lake Erie shoreline into Niagara, Hamilton, and the western Greater Toronto Area (GTA).
Travel Advisory
Farther north, active lake-effect snow bands are creating hazardous conditions on the roads. Major highways like 69 and 11 between Parry Sound, Sudbury, and North Bay could face significant impacts from persistent squalls, leading to localized snowfall ranging from 20 to 50 cm.
Residents are advised to stay informed and take necessary precautions as Toronto prepares for a snowy December kickoff.
