JJ Redick Shares Crucial Injury Update on Key Lakers Player

The Los Angeles Lakers are currently without their key offseason acquisition, Marcus Smart, who is facing a back-related injury. Smart has missed the last three games due to this setback. Lakers head coach JJ Redick provided insights into the nature of Smart’s injury before their recent game against the Phoenix Suns.

JJ Redick Discusses Marcus Smart’s Injury Update

According to Redick, Smart first experienced tightness in his back in a game three matches prior. Despite initially playing through the discomfort, Smart’s condition worsened the following day, prompting concern. To assess the situation, the Lakers had Smart undergo an MRI.

Positive News from MRI Results

Fortunately for the team, the MRI results indicated no serious issues. Redick noted, “The imaging was unremarkable. It looked like a normal 11-year NBA veteran.” He assured reporters that there is no long-term concern regarding Smart’s health, referring to the injury as a day-to-day situation.

Recent Game Performance

  • Marcus Smart played 20 minutes in his last game against the Clippers on November 25.
  • During that game, he contributed seven points, three rebounds, and three assists.
  • Since then, the Lakers have played without him against the Dallas Mavericks and New Orleans Pelicans.

Redick remains optimistic about Smart’s return, stating, “We expect him to be back soon. It’s not a long-term thing.” The Lakers are scheduled for a break on Tuesday and Wednesday before heading into a back-to-back series starting Thursday against the Toronto Raptors, followed by a matchup against Smart’s former team, the Boston Celtics. Smart’s availability for these upcoming games is yet to be determined.
