Gov.-Elect Mikie Sherrill Begins Assembling Her Cabinet

Gov.-elect Mikie Sherrill has taken her first step in assembling her Cabinet ahead of assuming office as New Jersey’s 57th governor. She announced Monday that Lt. Gov.-elect Dale Caldwell will serve as the state’s new secretary of state. The announcement comes following Sherrill’s decisive victory over Republican candidate Jack Ciattarelli by approximately 14 percentage points.

Mikie Sherrill’s Cabinet Assembly Begins

Sherrill, a Democrat and former congresswoman, will officially take office on January 20. With Caldwell as her first Cabinet pick, the administration is set to address vital state issues. Caldwell, who is 65 years old, is not only the current president of Centenary College but also served as Sherrill’s running mate during the election.

Key Responsibilities of the Secretary of State

Caldwell will oversee New Jersey’s Department of State, which has several important functions, including:

  • Managing elections
  • Promoting arts and culture
  • Supporting businesses
  • Preserving state history
  • Boosting tourism

Sherrill expressed confidence in Caldwell’s ability to bridge communities and deliver results. “His experience, integrity, and commitment to empowering every New Jerseyan make him ideal for this leadership role,” she stated.

About Dale Caldwell

As a familiar figure in New Jersey, Caldwell has an extensive background that includes:

  • Chairman of Sherrill’s transition team
  • Former deputy commissioner of the state Department of Community Affairs
  • Long-term member of the New Brunswick school board
  • A Methodist pastor in Plainfield

Caldwell will be the fourth individual to serve as lieutenant governor, and notably, the first man to hold this position in New Jersey. All previous lieutenant governors have also served as secretary of state, except for the late Sheila Oliver, who managed the Department of Community Affairs.

Vision for the Department of State

At the announcement event held in New Brunswick, Caldwell emphasized the Department of State’s importance in enhancing democracy and supporting New Jersey’s economy. “I look forward to expanding civic engagement and upholding the integrity of our elections,” he remarked.

Sherrill is expected to introduce additional Cabinet members over the next six weeks. In preparation for her administration, she has appointed more than 400 members to a transition committee, underscoring her commitment to a collaborative approach in governance.
