King Tides Bring Humboldt’s Highest Waves; Contribute to Science with Photos

As king tides approach Humboldt Bay, residents are encouraged to participate in documenting these significant high tides. The king tides will occur during high tide on Thursday morning, December 5, with peak times ranging from 10:05 to 10:50 a.m. These tides are expected to continue through Friday, with elevated tide levels anticipated into Saturday morning.

Understanding King Tides

King tides are exceptionally high tides that happen when the Earth, Moon, and Sun align during a new or full moon. This unique alignment results in tides that can reach heights exceeding 9.85 feet, surpassing average high tide levels by approximately 1.5 feet. The California King Tides Project warns that these conditions may lead to flooding in low-lying areas surrounding Humboldt Bay.

How You Can Help

The California Coastal Commission seeks assistance from local residents to photograph the king tides. These images are vital for illustrating the impacts of sea level rise on coastal regions over the coming decades. To participate, individuals can visit mapped locations in the area and capture images that showcase the tide’s effects.

  • Take photos within half an hour of the peak high tide for the most accurate representation.
  • Include stationary objects in your photos, such as piers or seawalls, to provide context for water levels.
  • Avoid disturbing wildlife, especially shorebirds, during your observations.

Community Events

The Friends of the Arcata Marsh will host an annual king tides tour on Friday, December 5, from 11 a.m. to noon. Participants can meet at the first gravel parking lot on South I Street near Samoa Boulevard. More information on the tour and photo documentation can be accessed through the California Coastal Commission.

Future King Tide Dates

For those interested in continuous participation, upcoming king tide occurrences are scheduled for:

Date Location
December 4 & 5, 2025 Northern and Southern California
January 2 & 3, 2026 Final King Tides of the Season

Those interested in learning more about the King Tides Project and photographic guidelines can register for a webinar scheduled for December 2, from 12:00 p.m. to 12:30 p.m.

Your participation not only aids scientific understanding but helps protect and inform our communities about rising sea levels and future coastal challenges.
