Icy Roads Trigger Crashes and Delays in Tulsa Metro
Winter weather has struck the Tulsa Metro area, leading to numerous accidents and significant delays. The Oklahoma Highway Patrol (OHP) reported a surge in incidents due to icy road conditions.
Crashes Reported Across Tulsa Metro
On Monday morning, OHP recorded alarming numbers of crashes between midnight and 9 a.m. Here are the key statistics:
- Fatality crashes: 2
- Injury crashes: 101
- Non-injury crashes: 225
- Motorist assists: 21
Additionally, EMSA reported that paramedics and EMTs responded to 35 traffic accidents, transporting 11 patients to local hospitals. This is about eight times the usual number for a Monday morning.
City’s Preparation for Winter Weather
In response to the forecasted winter conditions, the City of Tulsa took proactive measures last week. Crews prepared brine applicator systems, with an enhancement of calcium chloride this year to improve effectiveness. Treatment of roads began at midnight, prioritizing elevated areas.
Safety Advisory for Drivers
Despite these efforts, officials urge motorists to exercise caution. Drivers should reduce speed and avoid unnecessary travel until road conditions improve. Icy roads pose a serious risk, and public safety remains a top priority.
