Fayette County Schools Launches Second Barber Shop for Confidence and Mentorship

A new barbershop at Winburn Middle School in Lexington, Kentucky, aims to elevate student confidence while providing mentorship opportunities. Fayette County Public Schools (FCPS) officially inaugurated this barbershop, marking its second such establishment following the opening at Tates Creek Middle School.

Objective of the Barbershop

FCPS created the barbershop to foster relationship-building and candid conversations among students in a relaxed environment. Principal Eric Thornsberry highlighted that the shop will operate weekly, offering a unique setting beyond the conventional classroom experience.

Partnership with Sharp Futures

The in-school barbershop is part of a collaboration with Sharp Futures, a mentorship organization established six years ago. This initiative currently oversees four barbershops and beauty salons within schools in Lexington and Louisville.

Mentorship and Guidance

According to C.J. Carter, the Founder and Executive Director of Sharp Futures, the initiative goes beyond grooming. Carter emphasized the importance of providing consistent mentorship to young men, many of whom may lack such guidance in their lives. He believes that having mentors who resemble the students can significantly influence their development.

Participation and Impact

Typically, barbershops in schools engage 20 to 30 students each session. Barber Vincent Davis, a graduate and experienced hairstylist, expressed his support for the program. He stated that similar initiatives would have benefited him growing up, offering approaches not found in traditional curricula.

  • Students can sign up through their schools to take part in the program.
  • Participants like Vincenzzo appreciate the learning opportunities, saying, “It’s a good experience for kids.”

Future Expansion

Fayette County Public Schools is set to open another barbershop at Martin Luther King Jr. Academy on December 15. This expansion signifies the district’s commitment to enhancing student experiences through mentorship and vocational training.
