Kentucky School Barbershop Program Boosts Kids’ Confidence

The Sharp Futures Foundation has launched an innovative initiative in Kentucky schools by implementing in-school barbershops. This program aims to boost students’ confidence and self-image through regular haircuts and mentorship.

Kentucky School Barbershop Program Overview

In early December, Winburn Middle School welcomed its own barbershop. This initiative follows the successful establishment of similar programs at Tates Creek Middle School and will soon expand to Martin Luther King Jr. Academy.

Empowering Students Through Haircuts

C.J. Carter, founder and executive director of Sharp Futures, emphasizes the transformative power of haircuts. “A haircut can change how they see themselves,” Carter said. He believes that having a barber as a consistent mentor can significantly influence students’ perspectives on their futures.

A Unique Mentorship Model

Local barbers, such as Vincent Davis from Porch Barbershop, participate as mentors in this initiative. Davis, with nearly a decade of experience, shared his journey into barbering after high school. He sees the program as an opportunity to connect with students every few weeks.

  • Barber cuts hair and engages in conversation.
  • Offers a hands-on, supportive environment for students.
  • Creates an outlet for discussions beyond regular curriculum.

Davis stated, “It gives the kids something different. This is more physical and hands-on.” This approach not only provides students with a haircut but also fosters personal connections.

Growth of the Barbershop Program

This initiative represents the second in-school barbershop in Lexington and the fourth across Kentucky. The Sharp Futures Foundation envisions expanding this model throughout the state and possibly nationwide.
