Rutherford Teacher Charged with Assaulting Stewarts Creek Elementary Colleague

Rutherford County Schools is facing scrutiny after a teacher from Stewarts Creek Elementary was charged with aggravated assault and false imprisonment. The incident occurred on November 4, 2025, and involved first-grade teacher Jill-Marie Haynes.

Incident Details

On the day of the incident, Haynes allegedly threatened another teacher during an argument. According to reports, she confronted the colleague in her classroom and followed her into another room, blocking her exit. This confrontation escalated with Haynes reportedly wielding a paper cutter and making comments about harming the other teacher.

Investigation and Charges

The Rutherford County Sheriff’s Office investigated the case, led by Detective Blake Shaw. The other teacher expressed significant fear for her safety following Haynes’ actions. As a result, Haynes was arrested on the same day and later booked into the Rutherford County Adult Detention Center. She was released shortly after on a $6,000 bond.

Suspension and Court Proceedings

Following the incident, Haynes was placed on unpaid suspension pending the outcome of the investigation. Her court date was initially set for December 1, 2025, but has since been rescheduled to January 5, 2026. Attorney Ben Powers is representing Haynes in this case, where she is expected to appear before Judge Ben Bennett at 8:30 a.m.

School Overcrowding Issues

Despite significant investments exceeding $60 million aimed at alleviating overcrowding at Stewarts Creek Elementary, the school has continued to face capacity challenges. This situation has led to the rezoning of students to other K-5 facilities with available classroom space.

As the situation develops, the school district remains focused on ensuring a safe and supportive learning environment for all students and staff involved.
