Kalani Sitake has confirmed his decision to remain as the head coach of BYU, rejecting interest from Penn State. This announcement comes ahead of the Cougars’ participation in the Big 12 title game against Texas Tech.
Kalani Sitake’s Coaching Journey
Since taking over in 2016, Sitake has transformed the BYU football program. His coaching record stands at over 65% wins, which includes significant achievements such as:
- Leading BYU to an 11-2 record in 2024
- Achieving an impressive 11-1 record this season
- Securing at least 10 wins in four of the last six years
Current Season and Future Plans
This season, the Cougars have made a remarkable comeback after a transitional year in 2023, where they finished 2-7 in Big 12 play. Under Sitake’s guidance, they have claimed a 15-3 record since then, largely due to solid performances from freshman quarterback Bear Bachmeier.
In response to the interest from Penn State, BYU officials have prioritized retaining Sitake. They are currently working on a lucrative contract to keep him at the school.

Penn State had shown substantial interest in Sitake as part of their coaching search. Discussions reportedly involved staffing and various other details. However, no agreement was finalized, allowing Sitake to focus on leading BYU.
