Alabama Assistant Retains Head Coach Role Despite 2-10 Record
Boston College has chosen to retain head coach Bill O’Brien, despite an underwhelming 2-10 record for the season. O’Brien previously served as Alabama’s offensive coordinator in both 2021 and 2022, and his first year with the Eagles saw a more promising 7-6 record and a trip to the Pinstripe Bowl.
This season, however, was challenging for the Eagles, culminating in a 10-game losing streak. They managed to finish the year on a high note with a decisive 34-12 win over Syracuse. Athletic director Blake James expressed the mixed emotions surrounding the season in a letter addressed to the Boston College community. He acknowledged the disappointment among students, faculty, alumni, and fans while emphasizing the need for improvement.
Commitment to Football Excellence
James stated, “While our team ended the season positively, the overall results did not meet the standards expected of Boston College Athletics.” He remains confident that O’Brien is the right coach to lead the team forward. James pointed out the pressing changes in intercollegiate athletics, notably referencing a legal settlement that allows direct revenue sharing with student-athletes.
- The school plans to increase its revenue-sharing commitment.
- Boston College aims to align its football program with its peers in the Autonomy Four conference.
- Significant investments in football’s operational and administrative support will be made.
New Leadership in Place
In addition to coaching retentions, Boston College announced the hiring of Kenyatta Watson as general manager. Watson, a former Eagles player, joins after previous experience as assistant general manager at Auburn.
O’Brien’s Coaching Background
Bill O’Brien, aged 55, holds a college coaching record of 24-25 across four seasons. His tenure includes notable accomplishments:
- At Penn State (2012-2013), he recorded a 15-9 record.
- O’Brien received the Paul “Bear” Bryant Coach of the Year Award in 2012.
- He previously coached the NFL’s Houston Texans from 2014 to 2020.
While leading the Texans, O’Brien produced a 52-48 record, securing four AFC South Division titles, although he did not achieve any playoff victories.
After his time with the Texans, he returned to Alabama, where the Crimson Tide reached the College Football Playoff National Championship game in his first season. However, criticism arose during the 2022 season, particularly regarding his management of star players like running back Jahmyr Gibbs.
Before taking on the role at Boston College, O’Brien briefly worked with the New England Patriots and had a stint as Ohio State’s offensive coordinator.
As the program moves forward, Boston College aims to fortify its football team and strive for improved results under coach Bill O’Brien’s leadership.
