BC Renews O’Brien Contract, Boosts Financial Commitment

Boston College has officially renewed Bill O’Brien’s contract, committing to a third year as head coach. This decision follows a challenging season for the Eagles, who finished with a 2-10 record, marking their worst performance since 2012.

Increased Financial Commitment to Football

Athletic director Blake James announced that Boston College will enhance its financial investment in the football program. This move aims to align the Eagles with their peers in the Autonomy Four conferences.

  • Increased revenue share allocation to the maximum level.
  • Significant investments in operational and administrative football support.

New Roster Management Support

As part of this financial commitment, the college has hired Kenyatta Watson as general manager. Watson, a Boston College alumnus, previously served as the assistant general manager at Auburn. His experience includes successful recruitment roles at Georgia Tech, Florida State, and Auburn, indicating a focused effort by Boston College to elevate its talent pool.

$50 Million Challenge for Scholarships

Additionally, James revealed a significant opportunity for boosting funds. Boston College has received a $50 million challenge to match new endowment gifts aimed at athletic scholarships and operational costs over the next five to seven years.

Coach O’Brien’s Tenure So Far

In his two seasons with the Eagles, O’Brien has recorded a 9-16 overall record. Last year, the team managed a 7-6 finish, culminating in a loss at the Pinstripe Bowl.

With renewed confidence in O’Brien and strengthened financial backing, Boston College aims to improve its football program significantly in the coming years.
