Ukraine Conflict Update: No Compromise Reached on Russian-Occupied Territories, Kremlin States
Germany has launched a specialized police unit dedicated to combating drone incursions at critical sites. This initiative was officially announced by Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt, with the unit commencing operations on a recent Tuesday.
Details of the New Anti-Drone Unit
The newly formed unit is located in Ahrensfelde, northeastern Berlin. Ultimately, it aims to employ over 130 personnel who will be prepared to respond to drone threats across the nation swiftly.
Defense Measures Against Drone Threats
- German airports will be upgrading their defenses against drones.
- Key measures include jamming command signals and implementing detection technologies.
- Interceptor drones will also be part of the strategy to ensure safety.
Alexander Dobrindt emphasized the importance of these measures. He stated the need to “detect, repel, intercept, and if necessary, destroy drones.” Ensuring national security from hybrid threats posed by drones is paramount.
Legal Framework and Coordination Initiatives
The German police have previously been authorized to neutralize drones. Furthermore, a new bill is expected to empower the military to engage with unauthorized drones entering national airspace.
In addition, a national anti-drone defense center will soon be established to enhance coordination among various services tackling this emerging threat.
Rise in Drone Incursions
Drone sightings at airports and sensitive military sites have surged in recent months across Europe. Suspicions have arisen, particularly towards developments in Moscow, indicating a broader regional concern.
