SC Child Care Scholarships Paused Amid Federal Funding Shortage

South Carolina’s Child Care Scholarship Program is halting new and renewal applications. This decision comes after the depletion of federal COVID-19 relief funds and the residual effects of a government shutdown.

Details of the Child Care Scholarship Program Suspension

The Department of Social Services (DSS) announced the pause effective Monday, December 1. From that date, new applications will be denied unless submitted by individuals in protected categories.

Who Remains Eligible?

  • Families currently receiving Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF)
  • Families involved in child welfare services
  • Families with special needs status

These applicants will continue to have their applications processed during the suspension period.

Expected Resumption of Applications

DSS plans to resume accepting applications in January 2026, contingent on available funding. Current participants in the program will not face any immediate disruptions. However, they will not be able to renew their applications during this pause.
