Gay O’Brien, a highly respected figure in the Galway GAA community, passed away on December 1, 2025, at University Hospital Galway after battling illness. Originally from Upper Salthill and later residing in Corbally, Barna, he leaves behind his wife Sandra, son Shane, daughter Paola and her partner Antonio, and his cherished granddaughter Isabella. His legacy is felt deeply by family, friends, and the community.

O’Brien was a dedicated manager and influential advocate for the ladies’ game in the Galway GAA community. He notably served as the senior manager of Killanin GAA, a role he resumed shortly before his passing, having previously managed the club in 2005.
A Career of Success in GAA
His contributions extended beyond Killanin GAA. O’Brien managed several teams, including Galway Ladies, ATU/GMIT, and CLG Bhearna. His tenure with ATU Sport from 2017 to 2023 was particularly distinguished. Under his guidance, the teams achieved significant success, securing:

- Lagan Cup
- Donaghy Cup
O’Brien’s unique blend of humility, honesty, and humor significantly impacted his players and colleagues. He was a steady influence, creating an environment of encouragement and support.

Following his passing, tributes emphasized that his kindness, generosity, and unwavering support profoundly shaped the lives of many.
His funeral arrangements include a repose at the Cillín within the Church of Mary Immaculate Queen, Barna, beginning at 5:30 PM on December 3, followed by removal into the church at 7 PM. A funeral mass will be held at 12 PM on December 4, concluding with a private cremation at Shannon Crematorium.
