November Sees Record Nearly 100% Electric Vehicle Registrations

November has emerged as a groundbreaking month for electric vehicle (EV) registrations in Norway, according to the Road Traffic Information Council (OFV). With a total of 19,427 new EVs recorded, this month has seen the strongest sales figures so far this year.

Record Electric Vehicle Registrations

In total, Norway reported 19,899 new car registrations in November, marking a steady climb in the electric vehicle market. The percentage of electric vehicles among all new passenger car registrations hit an impressive 97.6%. The number of new electric vehicles during this month significantly outpaced previous figures, showcasing remarkable growth.

Comparison with Previous Months

  • November 2023: 19,427 new EVs
  • October 2023: 10,852 new EVs
  • November 2022: 10,940 new EVs

This shift represents an increase of 8,575 units compared to October 2023 and 8,487 more than the same month in the previous year.

Factors Influencing Growth

Several factors have contributed to this surge in registrations. The OFV attributes this growth to:

  • Expected tax reforms in the upcoming year
  • Enticing discount campaigns from manufacturers
  • Enhanced availability of affordable electric vehicles
  • A steady economic recovery

Geir Inge Stokke, Managing Director of OFV, stated, “This November is historically strong. Many consumers are accelerating their car purchases due to uncertainties about proposed VAT changes starting in 2026.” This trend suggests a continued increase in registrations through December.

Market Leaders and Tesla’s Dominance

Tesla is leading the market with a significant market share of 31.2%, attributed to 6,215 new registrations. This achievement means that nearly one in three new cars is from Tesla.

Overall registrations for Tesla in 2023 have reached 28,606, surpassing their previous annual record of 26,641 in 2022. This performance places them ahead of Volkswagen’s record of 26,572 from 2016. With favorable predictions for December, Tesla may reach over 30,000 registrations this year.

Other Key Brands

Following Tesla, the other brands with notable growth include:

  • Volkswagen: 2,198 vehicles
  • Volvo: 1,867 vehicles
  • BMW: 1,104 vehicles

While Chinese brands like BYD, MG, and XPeng are not at the forefront of registrations, they are gradually increasing their market presence.

Top Selling Models

Among car models, the Tesla Model Y continues to lead in registrations. However, the Model 3 closely follows, indicating competitive dynamics within Tesla’s own lineup. The specifics of the top-selling models for November are:

  • Tesla Model Y: 3,648 units
  • Tesla Model 3: 2,562 units
  • Volvo EX40: 916 units
  • VW ID.4: 892 units
  • VW ID.7: 780 units
  • Volvo EX30: 774 units
  • Ford Explorer: 508 units
  • Skoda Elroq: 486 units
  • Skoda Enyaq: 420 units
  • BMW iX1: 418 units

This competitive landscape demonstrates the rising popularity of electric vehicles in Norway, alongside the increasing variety of options available to consumers.
