Colorado Braces for More Snow with Active Weather Pattern’s Return
Colorado is preparing for a series of winter storms as an active weather pattern returns to the region. Following a holiday weekend that brought one of the latest first snows on record for metro Denver, another weather system is set to arrive.
Upcoming Snowfall in Colorado
According to Russell Danielson, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Boulder, the next system is expected from Tuesday night into Wednesday. The forecast indicates:
- 1-3 inches of snow across most of the plains, including metro Denver.
- Higher amounts on the Palmer Divide.
- Less accumulation in the far northeast, near Nebraska.
Snow Accumulation Predictions
In the high country, models predict a more substantial snowfall, estimating between three and seven inches of snow. The Medicine Bow and Park Range regions are anticipated to receive the highest totals.
Despite the expected snow, conditions may remain challenging for commuters. Danielson mentioned that drivers could encounter hazardous travel conditions, particularly during the Wednesday morning rush hour.
Extended Weather Forecast
Temperatures are projected to stay below freezing from Tuesday night through Wednesday night. While forecast models have shown variability this season, Danielson expressed optimism about the incoming system, noting the potential accuracy of the 1-3 inch forecast for Denver.
Snowfall Totals for Northern Colorado
Further north, cities such as Fort Collins, Greeley, and Fort Morgan may see snow accumulations ranging from a trace to two inches as the storm progresses.
Snowpack Conditions
Recently, snowfall in the mountains has contributed to the state’s snowpack, although totals remain below average. Danielson remarked that the recent weather events have been beneficial, with more snow systems on the horizon.
There are additional weather systems anticipated throughout the following week. These include:
- A longer-lasting system arriving early Saturday and lasting through Sunday night.
- A potential wave bringing more snow on Tuesday of next week.
These upcoming snow events are primarily expected to benefit the mountains, with limited snowfall anticipated for lower elevations, including metro Denver and surrounding plains.
Historical Context
This year’s winter season is starting unusually late for Denver, registering as the second-latest first snow on record. The only later start was in 2021, when the first snow fell on December 10.
