TxDOT Boosts Winter Preparations for Holiday Travel Season

The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) is enhancing winter weather preparations in anticipation of the holiday travel season. This initiative was announced during a media briefing that included representatives from AAA and the TxDOT HERO Program. Officials are focused on maintaining critical roadway access for families and emergency services during potential winter storms.

Key Winter Travel Insights and Safety Measures

TxDOT aims to ensure that the most vital roads remain functional at all times, especially during adverse weather conditions. Tucker Ferguson, the TxDOT Austin district engineer, confirmed that their teams are available 24/7 to keep vital roads passable.

Projected Travel Trends

According to AAA, nearly 5.3 million Texans are expected to travel by car during the Thanksgiving period this year. Daniel Armbruster, a senior public affairs specialist at AAA, noted that this reflects a strong desire for family connections during the holidays.

Preparedness and Resources

To enhance winter readiness, TxDOT Austin has significantly increased its supplies. Since 2021, the stockpile of brine and magnesium chloride has tripled to effectively melt ice on roadways. The district is equipped with over 150 pieces of equipment, including five snowplows, and has assembled a workforce of 270 crew members for winter operations.

Safety Regulations for Drivers

Officials reiterated the importance of obeying Texas’ “slow down, move over” law. This regulation mandates that drivers either change lanes or reduce their speed by 20 mph when they encounter vehicles with flashing lights. This law is critical as it helps protect roadside workers, who fall victim to distracted driving often, with an average of 24 injuries or fatalities annually.

Roadside Assistance through TxDOT HERO Program

The TxDOT HERO Program provides valuable roadside assistance services. Joey Campbell from the program confirmed that help is available from 5 a.m. to 9 p.m. on weekdays, with extended hours on I-35. Services include fuel delivery, tire changes, and free water for motorists in need.

Traveling Safely This Winter

TxDOT recommends that all drivers take several safety precautions before hitting the road:

  • Check weather forecasts and road conditions at DriveTexas.org.
  • Reduce speed and drive cautiously in winter weather.
  • Avoid distractions such as mobile devices.
  • Never drive under the influence of alcohol.
  • Always buckle up for safety.

As the holiday season approaches, staying informed and prepared is essential for a safe travel experience across Texas roadways.
