Human Rights Watch Challenges FIFA on ‘Peace Prize,’ Awaits Response
Human Rights Watch has recently reached out to FIFA regarding its new initiative, the FIFA Peace Prize, which will be awarded for the first time during the draw for the 2026 World Cup.
FIFA Peace Prize Announcement
On November 5, FIFA unveiled the “FIFA Peace Prize — Football Unites the World.” The announcement was made by FIFA President Gianni Infantino, who emphasized the importance of recognizing those who promote peace.
Details of the Award
- The prize aims to honor individuals who unite people globally through peaceful efforts.
- The inaugural award will be presented on December 5 during the World Cup draw in Washington D.C.
- FIFA intends to grant this award annually.
Human Rights Watch’s Inquiry
Human Rights Watch has sent a letter to Infantino, seeking clarity on the award’s selection process and criteria. The organization outlined five specific questions:
- What formal criteria will FIFA use to evaluate nominees?
- Will these criteria be made public prior to the award ceremony?
- How will FIFA identify and receive nominations? Will a list of nominees be shared?
- Who will make the decisions on the recipient, and what qualifications do they have?
- How will human rights considerations influence the selection process?
Concerns Over Legitimacy
Minky Worden, director of global initiatives at Human Rights Watch, expressed skepticism about the award’s legitimacy due to a lack of transparency and established criteria. She compared the FIFA award to the Nobel Peace Prize, which often recognizes champions of democracy and human rights.
FIFA Council’s Surprise
The announcement took many within the FIFA Council by surprise, with reports indicating that the majority were not consulted regarding the establishment of this peace prize. This council consists of 37 members, including eight vice-presidents and 28 individuals elected by the member associations.
Awaited Responses
As of now, Human Rights Watch has yet to receive a response from FIFA to their inquiries, which were due by November 20.
President Trump’s Connection
President Trump is anticipated to attend the award event at the Kennedy Center, reflecting the intersection of sports and political figures in this initiative.
FIFA has been approached for comments on these developments regarding the FIFA Peace Prize.
